counterfeit signs and wonders

I used to attend a Pentecostal church. If you have ever been to one then you know what I mean. If you have not been to one then let me explain. The people love to speak in tongues. They raise their hands, close their eyes and speak gibberish they call speaking in tongues. It really cannot be explained as being anything else but gibberish. And the reason why I say that is because that is what is sounded to me. Perhaps at one time they each had an individual experience where they spoke in a tongue. But now it has turned out that they feel inclined to do it every time in corporate worship.

Whether you believe in the gift of speaking in tongues or not is not what I am addressing. Let’s assume that you do. I am telling you right now that speaking in tongues during a corporate worship service is not a biblical practice. It does not make you more spiritual. It makes you a distraction and it really hurts those who may be at your service as first-time visitors. If what is being done is considered a “prayer language” then it should remain in the prayer closet because that is something that happens between the person and God. It is not meant for public worship.  Paul rebukes the Corinthian church for his practice of everyone speaking in tongues during corporate worship which seems to be lost on the Pentecostals.

I don’t know what to believe about tongues. Paul rebukes the Corinthian church for their abuse of tongues. Now Paul does not tell them to cease speaking in tongues nor does it seem that they only speak in tongues when an apostle is in attendance. I will say that the way spiritual gifts are abused today I know that this is not the way they are supposed to be practiced. It is not meant to be done like some type of showman on a brightly lit stage where people pay x amount of dollars to attend where they hope to be one of the lucky people to experience a miracle. A true man of God would not seek to profit and live lavishly off those profits if that person has been chosen by God to be a vessel of the works of the Spirit.

We want to experience miracles. Some are so desperate. I remember someone telling me that they heard of an event where the Spirit allegedly move in a powerful way and were regretful for not being there to experience it. People want to and will travel almost anywhere so they can experience a manifestation of the Spirit, or what they believe is one. They will go to events and concerts hoping that one will happen and they can feel the rush. What is the difference between that person and the junkie who is jonesing for his next high?

What I am saying is that people who are not cessationists are usually sensationalists. There is too much hype around the performance of the spiritual gifts and too many people looking for external experience of “signs and wonders” and not enough searching of the scriptures and testing of the spirits. When Paul and Barnabas were worshipped by the people in Lystra who were calling them Zeus and Hermes, they tore their clothes and earnestly pleaded with the people to stop. Today, Benny Hinn would stand there accepting their worship because he would believe he was worthy of it.

Whether the Spirit has ceased to work through the spiritual gifts spoken of 1 Corinthians 12 is still up for debate I think. I can’t definitively say they are because there may be a time when the Spirit moved or will move in such a way. I do know definitively that what is seen around this country of sensational encounters and manifestations and visions are not from the Spirit.

hell is for real

Dark: (n) the absence of light; darkness. This is the definition I found for “dark”. It is one among many but I think it is the most appropriate. If one is in a dark room or place then it literally means that one is in a place that has no light.

I bring this up because I wanted to discuss death. To be more precise I wanted to discuss eternal death, life spent in hell, because those who do not repent of their sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will spend their eternity in hell suffering the wrath of God for their sins. We repent of our sins, seek the forgiveness of the Father through His Son while we are breathing the air in this life. If a person does do this then said person will find themselves in hell, experiencing the second death.

Now if dark or darkness is the absence of life then one could define death as the absence of life. The definition I found was the end of life in an organism. In reality death, especially the second death, is the absence of life. In this life we breathe, eat, sleep, think, move, react, and have billions of active neurons sending our billions of messages to our bodies in the physical state of life. Death means that that all stops. That’s a physical death.

Unfortunately we are all born spiritually dead. We all sinned in Adam and we inherit Adam’s sinful nature, which now means the spirit we were supposed to inherit instead is dead towards God. We cannot have a spiritual relationship with our Creator because we had sinned against Him through Adam effectively killing our spirit. We were still physically alive and we still have a soul but our soul is corrupted by sin while our physical body decays because of our sin, moving towards physical death.

But that would not be the only death meant for us. We also have to account for our sins which accrued a debt towards the Almighty. We had to pay that debt for breaking His law and violating His holiness. The place we are destined to pay that debt is hell, an eternal second death. Here is where my definition of death, the absence of life, finds its meaning.

God is the giver of life and in Him and through His sovereign will do we receive life. We would not be able to survive if God decided to stop exercising His will by sustaining and maintaining the universe He had created. All life would cease to be. Without Him we would not survive. Even during the seven year tribulation, He allows man to exist and allows them to essentially govern and do as they wish. He lets our sinful nature reign and He lets the evil that results from that lack of His restraint to fester and mature and spread like a cancer, but He never stops exercising His will over the functionality of the universe.

On the cross, Jesus suffered the wrath of His Father for the sins of all mankind throughout the history of his existence. God the Father focused His wrath towards God the Son, pouring it all on Him for our sake. Jesus did not speak out in complaint while enduring that outpouring of that wrath. He suffered in silence. It wasn’t until the sins of the world were upon Him and the Father had turned away because He could not bear the presence of sin with His holiness that Jesus cried out. An eternal relationship, bond, had been severed on the cross and Jesus Christ could not endure the absence of His Father. He died on that cross.

I believe that Jesus endured wrath meant for us but He also endured the second death meant for the elect. Hell is not just a place of torment and suffering in utter darkness. Hell is a place where the presence of God no longer is. He is the Author of life and He is light, no darkness can be found in Him. Hell is going to be one complete darkness and suffering but also the complete removal of God sustaining will. I believe that absence of the presence of God will more unbearable than the pain of the lake of fire for those who are destined for hell.

The absence of God means the absence of light and life. His sovereign will sustains all things and all people. Hell will be a place without God.

the narrow door

“Oof!” I exclaimed.

I was trying fit through this narrow door. As I walked up to the door it seemed like it wasn’t that small. I certainly could take what I was carrying. I had a backpack and a little cart full of stuff. Now I am not so sure.

I got to the door and I realized that I was going to have to ditch the cart. I picked through the contents to see what I wanted to take and what I didn’t think I would need. So I was able to trim down what I had to what I was able to carry.

I approached the door and tried to go through. The stuff I was carrying in my hands wouldn’t fit through door with me. So I picked through those and tried again after discarding more baggage. Still couldn’t fit. I then dropped everything I was carrying except my backpack. I squeezed, squirmed and tried to wiggle in through the door but I couldn’t fit.

As I sat their pondering about my predicament I noticed someone else come along. He didn’t notice me, or at least didn’t acknowledge that I was there, and he came to the door with his bags. He tried to get into the door but he wouldn’t fit either. He placed his bags on the ground and went through them. After about a half-hour he gave up, grabbed his bags and moved on.

A little while later (after I had removed more items and tried several more times without success) another man came to the door, carrying his own bags like the first. After staring at the door for about five minutes, apparently considering the door, he dropped everything he had and approached the door.

I eagerly watched to see what would happen. He got to the door and walked through without a problem. He just walked through the door and to the other side. As I sat there wondering what just happened I heard this huge uproar that startled me from my reverie. What was that? I wondered. Someone sure did sound excited and happy, actually a lot of someones, about his arrival.

I delayed. I had so many things I did not want to let go. I could not fathom why they would not fit through the door. As I contemplated my dilemma I witnessed more people approach the door. Most tried to carry their bags through the door and when they failed, they gave up and went on their way, some went away sad, some angry and some completely forgot about the whole thing. Very few people made it through, but when they did I heard the same shout of joy and sounds of celebration. At one point I tried to see through the door to the other side but it revealed nothing to me. I wanted to see the size of that crowd making that noise.

One person who couldn’t get through the door and was more confused than angry stopped to talk to me.

“I went to a revival meeting,” he said. “It was called something like a Circuit of Blessing or whatever. He told me that God wanted me to be successful. All I had to do was have faith in his son and I would become his son, too, and enjoy all the perks of being a son of God.”

He stood there for a moment, staring at the door. “And?” I asked.

He turned to me and looked at me for a minute before answering. “That’s just it. I have all this stuff, like you, and I can’t fit through the door. It seems you are having the same problem.”

I nodded in agreement. He shrugged in frustration and moved off shaking his head. I looked at him as he walked away and thinking about how I found myself here. I had heard a similar message but from a different preacher. He told me that if I gave him money I ensure my spot in God’s blessings and kingdom.

I gave and I gave and I gave. It seems that I did not know what God’s blessings were supposed to look like.

I had watched some other programming from preachers on the same channel. One guy was old and had his ministry in Florida. He talked about tulips which didn’t make any sense to me. This is a church show, why is he talking about flowers. As I stared at the door and then looked down at my bags and I remembered some of what he said. The one thing that got to my brain was that my bags were my stuff. If I want to get through that small door I don’t think I can take my stuff with me, at least that is what I thought is what he meant.

I shrugged my shoulders and my backpack dropped to the ground. I took a step forward and moved towards the door. As I made to step through the door I flinched because I was expecting to feel resistance but I made it through. I noise I heard next is what cause me to open my eyes.

This is just a story. I am not attempting to rewrite the gospel but I am trying to express a simple truth. We cannot expect to walk through the narrow door with any of our baggage of sin. We cannot expect to be unrepentant and unregenerate and still get through the narrow gate. We cannot expect blessings from God if we are unrepentant and remain in our sin. But we are so willing to be duped into believing we can that we will try anything except what the gospel tells we must do. We must repent of our sin and seek forgiveness from the Omnipotent God.

life verses part 2

In continuing with some appropriate life verses, I have thought of a few more.

Isaiah 6:1-8: 1In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”

4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”8And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
The appropriate response to an encounter with the Lord.  We should feel like we are going to fall apart at the seams mentally, physically and spiritually, and that our soul should be seared.  We would be in the presence of pure holiness, absolute purity which our tainted souls cannot withstand without the intervention of the Lord to protect us.  Aside from Jesus, Moses was the only man God talked to face-to-face as a friend, man to man, and even Moses needed to be shielded from the glory of God and was only able the backside of God’s glory.
To intimate that Jesus talks to one of us as equals is teach heresy.  To claim that Jesus came into your study to talk to you about a message He wanted you to preach is to teach heresy.  We would be in the presence of God and we would be compelled to react in terror and awe and complete submission.
As well I should add another life verse:
Jeremiah 17:9 & 10: 9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
When we allow our feelings or how we feel guide us more than our mind we will always venture into error.  Jesus told those who worship and follow Him and His Father must do so in spirit and in truth, with their heart, mind, and soul, and it will take all of one’s strength to maintain that balance.  Test the spirits to be sure that they are from God and not death wrapped in pretty paper with a satin bow.

My life verses

People like to pick verses that they hope and think will define their lives.  I have decided what mine are because it is not just one verse but a few put together and I wanted to keep it in context.  Here they are:

Job 38:

38 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Dress for action[a] like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
    or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who shut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb,
when I made clouds its garment
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
10 and prescribed limits for it
    and set bars and doors,
11 and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?

12 “Have you commanded the morning since your days began,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
13 that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth,
and the wicked be shaken out of it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal,
and its features stand out like a garment.
15 From the wicked their light is withheld,
and their uplifted arm is broken.

16 “Have you entered into the springs of the sea,
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?
Declare, if you know all this.

19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
20 that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?
21 You know, for you were born then,
and the number of your days is great!

22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow,
or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble,
for the day of battle and war?
24 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed,
or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?

25 “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain
and a way for the thunderbolt,
26 to bring rain on a land where no man is,
on the desert in which there is no man,
27 to satisfy the waste and desolate land,
and to make the ground sprout with grass?

28 “Has the rain a father,
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb did the ice come forth,
and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?
30 The waters become hard like stone,
and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades
or loose the cords of Orion?
32 Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth[b] in their season,
or can you guide the Bear with its children?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?
Can you establish their rule on the earth?

34 “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
that a flood of waters may cover you?
35 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go
and say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts[c]
or given understanding to the mind?[d]
37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens,
38 when the dust runs into a mass
and the clods stick fast together?

39 “Can you hunt the prey for the lion,
or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40 when they crouch in their dens
or lie in wait in their thicket?
41 Who provides for the raven its prey,
when its young ones cry to God for help,
and wander about for lack of food?

You see, this one chapter, and the chapters that follow, sums it all up.  I am little and insignificant.  I know nothing and I am nothing in light of the God of all creation.  This was never about me and never should be about me.  It should be about my Lord and Savior and my submission to His sovereignty.  I must answer as Job answered:

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
twice, but I will proceed no further.”

And again:

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

“I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
‘Hear, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
    but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself,
and repent[a] in dust and ashes.”

contending for the faith

I watched a movie a few years ago about a Washington lobbyist who bilked millions from several Native American tribes. (If you are interested the name of the movie is Casino Jack.) The main story surrounded the political activity of tribes building casinos on the reservations because their land was considered sovereign. This lobbyist swindled millions and got caught. There were a lot of interesting aspects of the movie, such as the hypocritical nature of politicians in regards to these lobbyists and the relationships they had. One other aspect of the movie was the relationship the lobbyist had with a former head of a Christian family political activist group. It was rather eye-opening for me.

The issue I wanted to address was the part played by the former head of the Christian family organization, at least as to how it was portrayed in the movie. This person was essentially in bed with the lobbyist. The lobbyist used him to motivate and mobilize the Religious Right on any given issue he wanted to go his way politically he would call his buddy. And the president of this Christian political group would incite the Religious Right and would probably get some financial kickback for his help. I was thoroughly disappointed and disgusted by what was portrayed, even if it was only partially true.

Why I bring this up is because I have been doing a lot of reading from bloggers writing about the celebrity pastors and their affinity to be accepted by the public, especially the politically connected and the Hollywood elite. It seems, like the former president of the Christian political group, that they sold their God so they could be sell-outs for man. It opened my eyes to what is really at stake here and it is not the notion of getting politicians to make decisions and cast votes based on Christian values.

In the book of Jude, Jude tells us we must contend for the faith in verse 3. This does not mean we must contend against the secular world because they are already against the truth of God and we really shouldn’t be surprised when they defame the name of Jesus. The thing is those attacks are only diversions. The real attacks occur from false teachers found with the body of Christ. These false teachers teach heresies and humanistic ideas mingled with enough Christianese to deceive the elect if possible.

Satan does his best work through systematic subtleties and infiltrations of humanistic ideals. It is does not happen in a short time but over an extended period of years. This has been going on for over a century with the progressive politics and progressive teaching of theological ideas of liberal thinkers. And today it has become entrenched in what most consider mainline Christianity like Southern Baptists and Pentecostals.

Beginning with Jesus and continuing through the apostles we are warned about the false teachers and false prophets that will arise from within the church. We are not told to defend against the government but against those within our church who propagate philosophies as direct inspirations from the Holy Spirit. We are to contend for the faith among the elect and expose teachings that will cause the sheep to stop relying on their Shepherd and rely on their own misguided abilities and the deliberate deceptions of those alleged godly men.

We must contend for the faith and judge all that is taught by any person teaching material loosely based on scripture. No one is above critical scrutiny, as the Apostle Paul commended the Bereans for searching the OT to verify that what he was teaching was consistent with God’s word. We are to do the same.

As a Derek Webb song says and I ask: Do these national celebrity pastors have one hand in a pot of gold while the other is in side of Jesus?

I’m not sure about all this doctrine in the Catholic church about the pope and College of Bishops being able to make infallible declarations.  I don’t think it is possible for a fallen man to make infallible statements regarding anything.  Consider the last infallible declaration made in 1950.  The pope declared that the Assumption of Mary was an infallible doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.  What that essentially means is that Mary went up to heaven in much the same way as Jesus or Elijah, minus the time on the cross, death and rising from the dead, and a chariot of fire.  Mary didn’t die, she was and then wasn’t.  Pope Pius XII declared this dogma as true doctrine via ex cathedra, making the statement infallible.

So now, any Protestant who disagrees with this statement is in opposition to God because the infallible statement is considered to be a direct communication from God, according to the doctrine of the RCC.  It does not matter that this statement was made by a Catholic to Catholics and those how are similar to them in tradition because they are the only people who hold this view of Mary.  The definition of  infallible sort of renders this statement to be true, regardless of whether it is or not.  Once declared an infallible statement, the statement cannot be considered to be made in error or is untrue.  I guess this means that it now becomes an eternal statement because the only person who is never in error or is ever found to be untrue is God.  If that be so then that is how they claim it can be received directly from God.

I cannot accept the doctrine.  I cannot accept that what someone says infallible, claiming it came directly from God, without any real evidence besides hearsay and legend and myth, has to be accepted at face value.  No one can claim to be infallible and neither can they state that a proclamation is infallible simply because the church they represent says they can.  It opens up the church to a lot of abuses and bad theology.

The gospel is a solid truth held up by insurmountable physical evidence.  It is not based on hearsay or legends.

Not feeling connected to people

Dear Jesus,

I am at my place of employment.  I am having a difficult time really relating to people.  What I mean is that I don’t feel the need or desire to be apart of their conversations.  I don’t feel like I covet relationships with non-Christians or envy the shallow companionship they share.  I don’t want to become a part of their life.  Sometimes I feel like I am watching them through a window or television, I’m there but I’m not.

I also feel that way about my job duties.  I work in the banking industry, sort of.  More like the banking information industry.  We have set deadlines and penalties for not meeting deadlines for information that in the end is just that, information.  We spend so much time and energy racing to receive information and to send information.  It feels empty, like I’m chasing my tail.

I am having difficulty being in this world but not so much as not being a part of this world.  I don’t want to appear to be distant but I can’t help but to want to distance myself from the world.  I want to be a witness for the gospel but I also want to contend for the faith and defend the faith.  I want to expose those who would enter into the sheep pen to steal some sheep, and deceive the elect if they could.

I’m not sure how my perspective shifted.  If it needs to be corrected please correct it.

Your servant,

a Protestant protesting

The Pope has made his first trip to the U.S. Everyone is making such a big deal about it. It seems that it is getting the same amount of attention as when the British royalty. It appears that we should be fawning all over this person but it does not make sense to me. The troubling thing about this visit is that professed evangelicals appear to be excited about the visit. They have joined together in support of this man’s visit. I have a few problems with people who claim to be products of the Protestant Reformation and seem embrace the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). The reason I have these concerns is because the RCC does not believe in faith alone in Jesus Christ for salvation and the doctrine they hold that the pope can speak words that are infallible.

Faith alone in Christ and the sufficiency of His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead is the prominent issue that caused the Reformation. Martin Luther applied to himself all the RCC taught regarding the purging of yourself for your sins. The RCC taught that works plus faith plus dedication to the RCC was what a person needed for salvation. Luther read “the righteous shall live by faith” and the proverbial lightbulb went off. He had it all wrong and the RCC had it all wrong. Following the years after he posted his 95 Theses on the church in Wittenburg, the RCC denounced the sola fide of the Reformation as an anathema and those who held to that belief were to be persecuted.

We cannot add anything to the work of Christ. The cross was sufficient for all the sins of man. We cannot add to it, pay any of it back or in some way become worthy of the salvation and gifts of grace and mercy we received. We are only found worthy in Christ’s death and resurrection and that only by faith which is supplied by the Father. We cannot come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ unless we are drawn to it by the Father. The RCC denies this teaching which is central to the gospel the apostles preached, including the alleged first pope Peter.

The RCC’s doctrine on Mary the mother of Jesus is a teaching of concern. She was a virgin when she bore Jesus so that Jesus was born without sin. She was not without sin before nor was she without sin after. But after that, she and Joseph, her forgotten husband, had a family that is referred to in the Gospels and two of Jesus’ brothers wrote epistles which are part of the NT canon. She was not raised up to heaven nor is she a mediator for sinners. The RCC has made her to be equal to Jesus, which either means that they believe she is the fourth person of the Godhead or that part of the Trinity that is the Son of God was split between Mary and Jesus, because Mary performs all the same functions as Jesus in the RCC doctrine.

Mary was a woman in need of a savior like the rest of humanity. She was privileged to be the woman chosen to carry the Son of God in her womb, the seed of the woman pronounced in Genesis. She is not God nor was she promoted to the Godhead.

I cannot partner with a religion that holds to those doctrinal beliefs. To consider them as true followers of the teaching of the gospel would be tragic error. I do not think anyone belonging to the churches of the Reformation should join the RCC in any kind of partnership. We should remain separate and consider them a mission field.

the wolves have entered in

I have a point to make, and I guess my point is that with all these people receiving new, special revelations from Jesus that happen outside the purview of scripture, will it happen one day that someone will claim that a squirrel climbed up to their back deck and talked to them about how to get fatter wallets. Will a skunk say that eating garbage out of someone’s trashcan is the key to a God-ordained healthy life?

You see, we are willing to believe these people. We are willing to believe people who are telling us that my best life is today. I can grow a money tree in my back yard if I just plant a dollar bill and surround it with faith. I can purchase a new home and drive the latest model luxury sedan if just close my eyes visualize my desires and click my heels. My world will go from black and white to vivid color on the other side of the six color rainbow.

They received a special revelation from God. They had a conversation with Jesus while looking in a steamy mirror after taking a hot shower. Perhaps the steam coalesced around the spirit form of Jesus, since He doesn’t bother appearing in His resurrected body like He did with His disciples in the locked upper room. The special spirit visits from Jesus are new revelations, new heavenly inspired information that supersedes and trumps inspired scripture that is 2,000 years old.

We don’t need to read the recorded words of the inspired prophets of God. When Peter and Paul suggested that we can learn from the prophets of the Old Testament that was because that was all they had. That was all they understood. Today’s prophets are more advanced because they found secret place inside their internal silent zone. They speak truth that is even truthier than the bible.

Why do we believe them? Why are we so concerned with living comfortably? What part of the bible tells me that we are entitled to being rich and not to suffer sickness? Why are so many are willing to be exploited so that the “prophet” can be rich?

The wolves have come to the door and we let them in. They didn’t need to huff and puff and blow the door down. All they needed to do was tickle our ears with empty promises.
